The worldwide surface relief hologram industry was valued at approximately $
1.39 billion in 2002, according to an global industry study by Reconnaissance
International, the publisher of Holography News.
Since 1996, the industry has seen an annual growth rate between 25-35%,
generating approximately $1.2B in hologram sales. Future growth through 2007
is projected at a healthy but slower rate of 12% per year.
Surface relief holography includes the key market sectors of security print,
brand protection, packaging, retail and promotion & illustration, as well as
equipment sales and installations related to these.
According to the study, hologram sales of divisions of larger public companies
had average sales of $17 million annually, and privately owned companies had
$19.5 million. For companies specializing only in hologram production, public
companies earned $22 million annually, while private companies averaged $2
million.
Reconnaissance's projections on surface relief holography are based on a
comprehensive survey of the hologram industry as well as statistical analyses
held by the company since 1987. About a third of the estimated 300 commercial
hologram producers worldwide provided information in the survey.
Sectors not included in the projections above are that of holographic disk
storage (HDS), industrial testing, medical applications, and education, among
others, since these do not directly relate to surface relief technology. HDS,
whose market is still a few years out, may potentially revolutionize data
storage and enable rapid distribution of digital content by allowing CDs to
store over 1,000 times more data than today's CDs do.
Details on the the study of the industry and trends can be found in The
Holo-pack * Holo-print Industry Study & Market Report available from
Reconnaissance International.
